A Puzzle Solved
This morning's Hot Weather Story, TV Column fans, concerns an idle Airwaves speculation of a few weeks ago that somebody, somewhere on CBS' "Airwolf" series staff had gone to St. John's College in Annapolis (whose dean was Dr. Stringfellow Barr during the 1930s) because, (a) the series hero's name is Stringfellow Hawke and (b) his MIA brother is named St. John (pronounced "sin gin").

Yesterday, following an intensive investigation by the Airwaves Phenomenological Research staff . . ."Airwolf" executive producer Don Bellisario confirmed from Los Angeles that it was he who had slipped in the references.

"I have five children," Bellisario said, "one of whom (Leslie) graduated from St. John's the summer I was writing the 'Airwolf' pilot. At her graduation in Annapolis I looked at a picture on the wall and noticed the unusual name of Stringfellow Barr. I'm not sure I was going to use 'St. John' for the brother's name until I said something about it and my daughter said, 'No, Dad, that's prounounced 'sin gin,' and that sounded right."

Annapolis looms large in Bellisario projects: His current big hero, Tom Magnum, is, of course, a Naval Academy graduate.

"Back in 1965-68, I worked for an ad agency in Lancaster, Pennsylvania," Bellisario recalled yesterday, "and I used to sail a lot to Havre de Grace and St. Michaels and Annapolis doing some fishing."
