Winding up the first made-for-cable season of Airwolf (7 p.m., USA), series star Barry Van Dyke is joined by his father Dick Van Dyke in a story that pits hero Hawke against archenemy Malduke (the elder Van Dyke). It's the first time the two have acted together since young Barry played a neighbor's kid on the classic Dick Van Dyke Show (although Barry worked as a production assistant on his father's New Dick Van Dyke Show in the early '70s).
As Malduke, Dick Van Dyke sports severe-looking, gray, slicked-back hair, wears sensors on the side of his face and eerie eyeglasses that give him a sinister, almost unrecognizable appearance. He's a crazed villain who is plotting to destroy the world's water supply, and his strange look isn't the only mystery about Hawke's opponent, as viewers will discover in a bizarre finale.
Barry Van Dyke says he had hoped his father would agree to do this guest shot, "playing a madman, some kind of villain, the kind of thing that he doesn't get to do very often. Something that would be fun." Has the Van Dyke name been more of a hindrance than a help to his career? "It kind of evens out. It's never really been a help. When I was starting out, it didn't even help me get an agent. And I don't think, really, anybody's going to hire you for your name anyway. There's just too much at stake."
