ALEX CORD
(Michael Archangel in AIRWOLF)
Alex Cord was born on May 3 in Roslyn, Long Island, N.Y., where his father was a construction engineer. At the age of two, his father placed him on a pony. That was the beginning of an addiction that has lasted to this day. Horses became a prime mover in Alex's thinking and he yearned to become a jockey. These hopes were dashed when he tipped the scales at 105 and was still growing and gaining; the weight limit for jockeys is 105 pounds. He developed polio at the age of 12 and it was the thought of horses and riding that was literally the spur that helped him recuperate. During this period, he was sent to a ranch in Wyoming, where he became even more proficient on horseback, eventually joining a rodeo.
During his rodeo days, he was gored five times, suffered a concussion and a fractured skull, broke three ribs at Madison Square Garden and wound up once again in a hospital, this time in New Mexico.
Prior to this, he had completed high school in New York and when he returned home, he entered New York University to become a literature major. To support himself, he worked in a bank at night and as a bricklayer during the summer.
When he turned to acting, he studied at the Actors Studio. Following a season with the Stratford, Conn. Shakespeare Academy, and two years of summer stock, he went on a national tour with the Shakespearean group.
The following year he appeared on the London stage with Siobhan McKenna in Doris Lessing's "Play With a Tiger" and was nominated for the prestigious London Critics' Award. He also appeared there in "The Rose Tattoo."
He made his motion picture debut in "Synanon," and other film credits include "Stagecoach," "The Brotherhood," "Stiletto" and "Sidewinder One." On television he has starred on the Network in "Hunter's Moon" and in such motion pictures for television as "Beggarman, Thief" and "Goliath Awaits," as well as appearing in episodes of many series.
Cord, who is 6' tall and weighs 170 pounds, has light brown hair and blue eyes. In addition to his love of horseback riding, he has become one of the stellar polo players in Southern California and has his own string of five ponies. He is a published novelist and is very knowledgeable about progressive jazz.
