ERNEST BORGNINE
(Dominic Santini in AIRWOLF)

Ernest Borgnine was born on January 24 in Hamden, Conn., where his parents had emigrated from Italy. When he was two, his mother took him to live in Milan, but they returned when it was time for him to attend school. He graduated from elementary and high school in New Haven, Conn.

Following graduation, he enlisted in the Navy as an apprentice seaman, and at the time of his discharge, ten years later, he was a chief petty officer, gunner's mate. Returning to civilian life, he continued his education by enrolling in the Randall School of Dramatic Art in Hartford, Conn. His first professional experience came at the Barter Theatre in Virginia, where he painted scenery, drove a truck and acted in a variety of roles.

He made his Broadway debut as the hospital attendant in "Harvey." His only other Broadway appearance, to date, was as a gangster in "Mrs. McThing," starring Helen Hayes.

Hearing about a film that was being made by the noted documentarian, Louis de Rochemont, he auditioned and won an important role in the project, "Whistle at Eaton Falls."

Borgnine's television credits encompass over 200 live appearances in such class anthology series as "Philco Playhouse" and "G.E. Theatre." He starred in the series, "McHale's Navy" and other television appearances include two motion pictures-for-television on the Network, "All Quiet on the Western Front" (for which he received an Emmy nomination) and the comedic, "Carpool."

The role of the brutal stockade sergeant, "Fatso," in "From Here to Eternity" marked the turning point in his film career. The role of the Bronx butcher in "Marty" won him not only an Academy Award but a special citation at the International Film Festival at Cannes and the Best Actor Award from the New York Film Critics. Other films he particularly treasures are "The Catered Affair" with Bette Davis (with whom he was reunited in a comedy, "Bunny O'Hare") and "Bad Day at Black Rock."

In June of 1984 he performed as a star of "Wild Rainbow," a still-to-be-released feature picture filmed in Hong Kong.

With his wife, Tove, who heads her own major cosmetics company, Borgnine lives in Beverly Hills. He has graying hair, blue green eyes, weighs 200 pounds and is 6 feet tall. He is a noted stamp collector and recently became a 33rd Degree Mason.
